Frankencake

My mom raised me that for your kids birthdays you should MAKE their cake. Now that we are all grown up and mom works long hours, we usually have cake from a bakery. But kids should have homemade cakes from their mom. Plus it is fun to plan a creative idea for your kids. My plan for Savannah was a pink cake with a Super Girl symbol on top.
Since mom is WAY better at cakes than me I almost always enlist her help. We decided to try white cake this time. White cake from scratch is really finicky so I thought, why not try a cake mix? Mom made the fillings, I made the cake and we got together the night before her party to assemble and decorate it. The fillings were custard and chocolate fudge. Mmmm..it is gonna be goooooood! Right?
As soon as we started to asemble it the cake began to crumble. We are icing the cake furiously trying to stay ahead of the damage. At one point I had almost my whole arm wrapped around the cake holding it together while mom franticly slapped more and more pink icing on it. I have never seen a more disasterous baking endeavor. My dad and husband jeered us from the sidelines and when we finally threw in the towel, they said. "Can we eat it NOW?"

Mom ran to Albertsons and bought a generic white cake and we frosted it with my homemade icing on top and used sprinkles to make the Super Girl symbol. It was not what I had dreamed, but Red was really excited about it. Dan and Dad dubbed the disaster, Frankencake and we all ate it that night. It WAS yummy if not beautiful. Here is a picture of our store bought substitute. Better luck next time. Live to fight another day Super Girl...

The Frankencake really *was* a very tasty treat. I too commend Kristin on her heroic mom efforts to provide homemade goodness to her Red, even if it didn't turn out so pretty. I do think this could become a fun Halloween tradition though...

The best cakes are the ugly ones.

OMG that is funny! Ok, maybe not to YOU, but... They both look yummy. Presentation is overrated. ;)

That looks like the last cake I made when my wife was gone. I'm glad it tasted good.

OMG, what an ordeal...this is a story you will be telling for YEARS to come. Probably when you are picking out red's wedding cake.

The first one looks yummy, the second beautiful. Good job mom

The making of the cake will long be remembered and she had two cakes, a tasty one and a pretty one.

Olivia is sitting on my lap right now and she keeps saying "Show me the cake again" and "mmmm....I like that cake". You have a fan over here!
