Horrifying and Disgusting

Ok, so I don't watch the news and am not the most informed person in the world. But has anyone heard of WBC (Westboro Baptist Church)? It is a group of crazies down in the south somewhere that is outraged by America's acceptance of homosexuality and because of that they go around and protest and military funerals with appalling signs and demonstrations. I guess they have been doing this since the war on started, but this is first that I have heard of them. Their slogan is "Thank God for IEDs" (Improvised explosive Devices). They believe that God has turned against America because of our lapse in moral judgment and therefore God is punishing our country by its soldiers. They carry signs that read "They turned America over to fags; they are coming home in body bags." HOW IS THIS LEGAL? Freedom of speech. One of the very rights that is being upheld by those soldiers that have died.
I just found out today that this group is planning on protesting at our friend, Bryan's, funeral. They have a flier that states that God Himself killed Capt. Bryan Willard and he died in shame - not honor. How disgusting. I am so saddened by this. These are the kind of people that make others Christians. Christianity is a message of love and not . Christ himself would be outraged at this misuse of His name. For anyone willing, I ask that you please pray for Bryan's family tomorrow during his funeral.
I have also just learned about the Patriot Guard Riders. "Our main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives. 1. Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities. 2. Shield the mourning family and friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors. We accomplish the latter through strictly legal and non-violent means." They are a group of motorcycle riders that have decided to stand up for what they believe in and support our troops and our nation. Check out their website. Pretty cool.

You are absolutely right- that is APPALLING!! Always a dangerous move to view ourselves as the voice for God. The spirit they are displaying by this protest is not one of love, but of hatred & bigotry. God loves sinners, it is sin He hates- because of what it does to us. Nobody falls too far out of reach for God to rescue them, so to say "God hates America" or "God hates Fags" is simply not true!! (This kind of behavior flares my temper and I have to pray very hard in order to be Christ-like towards such people.) To make a display at a funeral is like spitting in the very face of the grieving loved ones. What a warped concept of God these people have- it's very sad! They must live in fear of Him everyday or they would not be spreading ugly rhetoric.

My link to WBC was not working, but I adjusted it now for anyone interested.
Trailady, very true. It is too bad people are out there representing "Christians" when they are displaying the opposite.

people like that just don't seem to get it. setting that example of blind hatred and ignorance is precisely the opposite of what God teaches. If God were that judgemental he would never have bothered with humanity in the first place.

My heart goes out to that loving and steadfast family.

With an active duty husband (7th Fleet, we're stationed in Japan) and active duty nephew (CH-46 crewmember, Iraq 3rd tour) we've all run into our share of protests. But never one with vultures like this who have preyed upon grieving people primarily because their outlandish need for attention has outweighed their ability to simply be compassionate human beings. BRAVA for putting in the Patriot Guard Riders, I'm thinking of linking them on my site; you've made us aware of a GREAT organization.

I'd just like to be one more caring voice of support for this loving family -- by standing together and sending love we silence this kind of hatred.

Wow. I hate to admit it, but I scrolled through the second half. It is just so disgusting. Sometimes I just get so overwhelmed I have to shut it out. How does stuff like that happen???

I know, Carly it is so awful. What has got to be wrong with someone to believe that is in any way ok? The last part of the blog I think is the cool part. Check it out.

Becky is so right - God would never have bothered with us at all.

The guy's name is pastor (ugh) Fred Phelps and he is a pastor from Kansas - name of town?
